Doorstep Libraries
The doorstep library is an innovative project that brings books to young children living in poverty.
They take place once a week in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, aiming to reach the poorest and most excluded families in the community.
Currently, two doorstep libraries are run in the London Borough of Southwark offering families to borrow children’s books or to enjoy a home reading session.
Doorstep libraries create an atmosphere for very poor children to feel confident around books and parents to discover their child’s capacities building on strengths and discovering new ones. It also enables parents to develop their confidence in order to approach service providers that offer much needed family support.
The doorstep library has provided a unique opportunity for local professionals to get to know the families who find it harder to approach support services and enabled those workers to begin to understand the reality of the people for whom services have been created.
