Inauguration of a Commemorative Stone in Kielce

17 October 2007
Since the year 2000, a ceremony has been held each 17 October bringing together people around a memorial erected in memory of the homeless who have died on the streets. The stone was laid close by, at the entrance to a pedestrianised street, in the presence of Mr. Lubawski, the town’s mayor.
At the national level, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty was celebrated for the first time in 2007, with approximately one hundred and fifty events organised by NGOs and local authorities. These events included symbolic gestures, the diffusion of information on where to seek aid and assistance, and the public collection of signatures for the Call to Action in support of the “Ending Extreme Poverty, A Road To Peace” campaign. One initiative even led to the Francophone community marking the day with a “Reading for an End to Extreme Poverty” event at the Institut Français in Warsaw.
Alongside these events, a number of symposiums were held throughout the country, touching on themes linked to 17 October, and more than two hundred people met at the Polish parliament to debate issues and actions focused on early childhood.
