SUMMARY:International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) 2025
DESCRIPTION:“On the part of non-governmental organizations and civil society\, a major impact of the International Day [for the Eradication of Poverty] has been its empowerment of poor people. The International Day provides an important opportunity for people living in poverty to be visible\, to have voice and to provide their testimonies on one day of the year. People living in poverty are also empowered because the International Day gives them a sense of belonging in the community\, through their participation and involvement in community development programmes.” \n(United Nations\, Report of the Secretary-General\, A/61/308\, paragraph 53). \nEach year\, UNDESA\, along with other partners including ATD Fourth World International\, prepares initiatives and events to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP). \nFor 2025 the theme is Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment: Ensuring respect and effective support for families living in poverty. To learn more read the Concept Note for October 17\, 2025. \nSee if there is an October 17 event near you or come to or watch the event at the UN. \nOctober 17\, the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty\, is a day for understanding and togetherness\, a day to put the furthest behind first and a day to recommit ourselves to ending poverty in all its forms everywhere. People experiencing poverty are at the heart of every October 17 commemoration and the drivers in choosing the global theme. The 2025 commemoration will focus on ensuring respect and effective support for families. We need to better understand why poverty persists and why despite all the efforts made by parents\, their children continue to experience the same deprivation. We need to better understand the reality of poverty as experienced by the people affected\, so that appropriate support can be actioned. By focusing on families\, we continue to highlight the hidden dimensions of poverty — in particular the social and institutional maltreatment they suffer in their daily lives\, including situations of family separation due to poverty\, and the pressing need to end it. \nConcept Note for October 17\, 2025

SUMMARY:Beyond Symbolism and Rhetoric: Ensuring meaningful and deliberative participation and partnerships with the people furthest behind
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to watch the webinar for the occasion of the Second Summit of Social Development\, which takes place on 4 – 6 November\, in Doha\, Qatar. \nThis webinar takes place on November 5\, 3-4:30 pm Paris time. \nSign up here:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Q2wGqdxtSKiObgttbWUcGA \nDuring the event the following speakers will take the floor: \n\nAsha Athumani Mohamed ATD Fourth World Activist\, Co-researcher in the hidden dimensions of poverty research\nBeatriz Monje Barón IDEEP Program Coordinator at ATD Fourth World\nOlivier De Schutter UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights\nGabriele Koehler Senior Research Associate at United Nations Research Institute for Social Development\n\nThe event will be moderated by: Roberto Bissio Coordinator of Social Watch. \nDespite the decades-old attempts towards the eradication of extreme poverty\, progress is fragile and unequal\, with many policies and programmes failing because they often neglect the voices and experiences of people living in poverty. Lack of participation is now recognized as one of the main causes of ineffectiveness of these policies. \nTo bridge this gap and move beyond symbolic participation\, the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights\, in partnership with the International Movement ATD Fourth World\, developed the Inclusive and Deliberative Elaboration & Evaluation of Policies (IDEEP) tool. Rooted in the Merging of Knowledge approach\, IDEEP is a participatory instrument designed to ensure the direct\, meaningful involvement of persons experiencing poverty in policy design\, implementation\, and evaluation. This method aims to integrate their experiential knowledge with academic and professional knowledge to uncover the hidden dimensions of poverty\, thereby creating more effective\, evidence-based\, and genuinely inclusive anti-poverty strategies. This side event will also be enriched by the experience of the participation seen from the perspective of an ATD Fourth World Activist (person with lived experience of poverty) as well as a participation approach implemented by the UN Research Institute for Social Development. \nFor further information about the Summit\, please check the website: https://social.desa.un.org/world-summit-2025

SUMMARY:Wider World Conversations
DESCRIPTION:ATD Fourth World’s virtual ‘Wider World Conversations’ began in 2023\, serving as an opportunity for individuals to develop a sense of connection to ATD Fourth World’s actions across the world\, as well as to discover and explore topics more broadly related to the wider context of social justice and anti-poverty action. \nParticipants take turns facilitating conversations\, creating safe spaces to delve into broad interests. From questions of how to communicate ethically and authentically\, to gaining an understanding of missing and murdered Indigenous women in New Mexico\, to connecting to musicians from Playing for Change\, Wider World Conversations spark thoughtful and inspiring conversations\, allow participants to share ideas\, and build a global community. \nWe are delighted to announce that\, after a brief pause in late 2025\, these conversations have resumed! \nThese conversations are open to ATD Fourth World members\, and those interested in our work — wherever in the world they’re based. We would love to welcome you into our WWCs\, so if you are interested in joining in\, please reach out to skeltond(at)atd-uk(dot)org for more information. \nEvent first published at https://atd-uk.org/2026/02/16/wider-world-conversations/ \nImage by Caitlin Sibthorpe

SUMMARY:Eradicating Poverty Beyond Growth: A Global Roadmap for a New Economy
DESCRIPTION:Register here to attend in person \nRegister here to follow online \nEradicating Poverty Beyond Growth: A Global Roadmap for a New Economy is a high-level\, international policy conference organised under the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights\, Olivier De Schutter\, as a contribution to the International Labour Organization-led Global Coalition for Social Justice. \nHeld at ILO Headquarters in Geneva\, this public event will bring together leading scholars\, diplomats\, UN officials\, policymakers\, trade unions\, employers’ organisations\, civil society organisations\, and social movements from around the world to discuss strategies to confront the intertwined crises of poverty\, inequalities and ecological breakdown\, beyond the limited imagination of economic growth orthodoxy. \n22 April 2026 – ILO\, 4 route des Morillons\, CH-1211 Geneva\nDOWNLOAD THE FULL PROGRAMME (SPEAKERS TO BE CONFIRMED) \nREGISTER TO ATTEND IN PERSON \nREGISTER TO FOLLOW ONLINE \n\nAs environmental collapse accelerates\, inequalities widen within and between countries\, and economic precarity becomes pervasive\, the long-standing assumption that economic growth alone can reduce inequalities and end poverty is falling apart. What remains is an urgent challenge: how can societies secure social justice\, economic security and human dignity without relying on a development model that deepens extraction\, exclusion and ecological harm? \nEradicating Poverty Beyond Growth: A Global Roadmap for a New Economy offers an important forum in which to discuss how moving beyond growth is not about bringing economic activity to a halt. Rather\, it requires confronting the failures of growth as it has been pursued in practice. Leading experts will take to the floor in Geneva to articulate alternative development pathways that decentre GDP as the primary measure of progress and demonstrate how social well-being and ecological integrity can be advanced through models less reliant on continuous economic expansion. \nThe event will also provide a key opportunity to engage with the Roadmap for Eradicating Poverty Beyond Growth\, co-constructed by a large number of UN agencies\, NGOs\, unions and academic experts\, who have been collaborating since 2024 to agree on proposals intended to achieve social progress and improve well-being without relying on perpetual economic growth. \nEradicating Poverty Beyond Growth: A Global Roadmap for a New Economy marks a pivotal step for the Roadmap ahead of its formal presentation to the Human Rights Council in summer 2026. As international deliberations advance on shaping the post-2030 development framework\, the event also signals a historic shift in the international community away from the false inevitabilities of growthism\, and toward economic systems grounded in the effective realisation of human rights\, well-being and ecological responsibility.
