What is Poverty? Who Decides How We Define Poverty?

ATD Fourth World, in partnership with Oxford University, conducted a participatory international research project called “The Hidden Dimensions of Poverty”. The project took place in six countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, France, Tanzania, the United Kingdom and the United States. For three years, people living in poverty, professionals and academics worked together to clarify how we understand poverty and its multi-dimensional aspects.

However, street vending is threatened in most Asian countries due to standardized urban development patterns. This puts at risk an entire informal economy--from the people who work for street vendors to those who manage to make ends meet by purchasing the inexpensive goods they sell.

Taking Initiative to Clean up the Neighbourhood

During the rainy season, it is impossible to walk anywhere without getting your feet wet in some neighborhoods of Antanarivo, Madagascar's capital city. Increasingly violent weather and other problems leave the narrow streets flooded with rubbish. Residents developed a project to fix the main street with paving stones made from recycled bottles. The initiative hired local young people and provided technical training in how to make and install the innovative paving stones.<br />

The number of refugees around the world is increasing at an alarming rate. But contrary to popular belief, Western countries are far from taking in the majority of people fleeing armed conflict. Generally, these victims seek refuge in another region of their own country or in a neighbouring country. These neighbouring countries are often experiencing similar economic and security instability. Three projects demonstrate how ATD supports migrants in Lebanon, France, and Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Zero Long-Term Unemployment Zones” Experiment in France: Work as a Common Good

Launched in 2017 by ATD Fourth World, the “zero long-term unemployment zones” experiment has already created 800 jobs in France. It has also helped 11 companies looking to recruit new employees. The idea is to offer a job opportunity to anyone who has been unemployed for at least a year.

Unfortunately, the term “economy” has been squeezed into a definition focused on a single kind of “market”. The “market economy” says it all in its name because the market determines what must be produced and how to produce it.
