With the United Nations

The International Movement ATD Fourth World believes the United Nations has a key role to play in the eradication of extreme poverty. Through our presence we work towards:

  • the representation of the poorest members of society, from both the global north and south, in decision-making processes
  • developing mechanisms to protect the rights of people living in extreme poverty

Contribution by the International Movement ATD Fourth World to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development zero draft outcome document.

November 2011

Input from the International Movement ATD Fourth world to the compilation document that will serve as a basis to the preparation of the zero draft of the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio +20, in june 2012. Our key message is that the eradication of extreme poverty is a necessary condition to the realization of sustainable development.

From poverty to sustainability: People at the centre of inclusive development.

On October 17, the annual commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty took place at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Co-sponsored by ATD Fourth World, the NGO Sub-Committee on the Eradication of Poverty and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, over 200 people heard speakers from the United Nations system and people with first-hand experience of poverty from New York and New Orleans, address the theme of "From poverty to sustainability: People at the centre of inclusive development." The event also counted upon support from the Permanent UN Missions of Burkina Faso and France; whose ambassadors addressed the commemoration. The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon also presented his message for the International Day by video.
