ATD Fourth World has held participatory status at the Council of Europe since 1977 and advocates for the involvement of people experiencing poverty in the development of various research, reports and guidelines on social cohesion and access to rights.

Through cases brought before the European Court of Human Rights and the European Committee of Social Rights, ATD Fourth World has helped establish case law and contributed to the recognition of extreme poverty as a violation of human rights.

As an active member of the Conference of INGOs (CINGO), the civil society pillar of the Council of Europe, we currently co-chair the Committee for the European Social Charter alongside Caritas Europa. This committee works towards the full ratification and effective implementation of the Revised European Social Charter in all Council of Europe countries.

Each year during the CINGO Autumn session, a ceremony marking the United Nations-recognised International Day for the Eradication of Poverty takes place by the Commemorative Stone in front of the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg. See more about the ceremony in 2025.
