Republic of Madagascar

The Movement ATD Fourth World has been operating in the Republic of Madagascar since 1989. A group of fixed volunteers works in Antananarivo (capital). These volunteers are in direct contact with one group of friends in Toliara (south of Antananarivo) and another group of friends in Mahajanga (west of Antananarivo).
The Movement Fourth World ATD has the following major objectives:
Ensure grass-root presence and involvement on housing estates and embark on knowledge exchange:
In the poorest areas of the Capital, Toliara and Mahajanga, the opportunities to exchange knowledge with children, young people and adults are plentiful:
Street libraries, embroidery workshops, photography workshops (in partnership with the Sidina association) are optimal occasions to enhance knowledge and learn.
Provide access to modern technology and fair employment opportunities:
A pilot project “Travailler et Apprendre Ensemble” (Working and Learning Together), a result of more than ten years of experience of life in the poor area of Antohomadinika in Antananarivo was established by the Alacatal-DTS-MOOV corporate collaboration. This project includes IT training programs for young people (16-25 years old) from very poor backgrounds, in addition to the creation of a traditional crafts co-operative realised with the help of adults. This co-operative creates products which will be sold to the single market; products include peanut oil and wood furniture. Additionally, those involved use the Internet commercially to sell embroidery and weaving to the export market. The World Bank supports this project.
Become an active participant:
Using its twenty years of experience in Madagascar, the Movement ATD Fourth World has set up partnerships with all types of organisations: Centre de formation pour les animateurs-éducateurs (CFAE); (Training Centre for Youth and Social Workers) which oversees activities for children from poor backgrounds, Plate-forme de la Société Civile pour l’Enfance (PFSCE) (Support Line for Children) which publicises and promotes the Rights of the Child, the sociology department at l’Université et l’Institut Supérieur des Travailleurs Sociaux (ISTS) (University and Establishment of Higher Education for Social Workers).
